Clicker Training
What is it?
Clicker training is based on operant conditioning. It is the act of pairing a neutral stimulus ie. the click sound and something the dog really enjoys ie. food.
How does it work?
The clicker is not a magic wand. It is just a way to mark the exact moment the dog produces the behaviour you want.
How do i do it?
Firstly you will need to "charge" the clicker. Press down on the clicker until it makes the sound then give your dog a treat, you must do this very soon after you click! Repeat about 20-40 times. Ideally your dog should be looking at you expecting a treat every time you make the click sound but ive found with my dogs that it may take a few sessions.
Will it work for my dog?
Some dogs are initially scared of the clicker, some dogs take a while to understand what it means but once your dog has caught on you will get to see what i call the lightbulb moment when finally you can communicate with your dog.
